This large enameled tray, by Swedish design icon Astrid Sampe, is a classic expression of Scandinavian modernism. It manages to feel bold and graceful effortlessly. Check out the graphics, expressive black calligraphic lines dance across the white surface. Sampe simply takes an everyday, functional object and turns it into high art.
Sampe was actually the first person to head Nordiska Kompaniet's textile studio back in 1937, and she was putting bold abstraction on household goods long before anyone else. This tray's free-flowing pattern channels a vibrant 1950s and '60s mod energy.
