This is a pair of vintage bamboo and brass bookends designed by Carl Auböck II for the Werkstätte Carl Auböck in Vienna. They’re in excellent condition. Sculptural. Functional. And very collectible.
Designed in 1950s Vienna. What makes them special isn’t decoration. It’s how the materials are used. Each piece is simple. A solid cylinder of natural bamboo rises from a brass base. That’s it. But the contrast does all the work. The bamboo feels warm and organic. The brass feels cool and steady.
This is classic Auböck. He had a gift for taking everyday objects and giving them presence without making them loud. Just smart design and beautiful materials.
They hold books. That’s their job. And they do it well. But they don’t disappear on a shelf either.
